Despite the commonly held belief that women are the more romantic, sensitive sex, a new study suggests that they can be just as pragmatic as men when it comes to their reasons for having casual sexual encounters. “Like men, a number of women said they were basically motivated by desire and pleasure,” says Pamela C. Regan, Ph.D., a psychologist at California State University in Los Angeles. Regan surveyed 188 adults ages 18 to 45 and found that 44 percent of women and 68 percent of men had had casual sex — flings, one-night stands or “sexual friendships,” where partners sleep together but don’t consider the relationship romantic. Surprisingly, women were likelier than men (24 percent versus 16 percent) to say they sought out these liaisons to expand their sexual horizons.
